Persona Education Newsletter, May-21
17-May-21
Relationships and sex education should support our young people in developing relationships that are Respectful, Responsible, Robust, Resilient, Reciprocal and Rewarding.
In September 2020 sex and relationships education in the UK was replaced in secondary schools by mandatory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). And from January 2021, inspectors started reporting on schools’ readiness to teach the new curriculum, and their future plans.
Persona consults teenagers all the time, and seeking insight for our upcoming 'Healthy Relationships' modules recently, we asked 26 young people in the UK about relationships. Our main take-away was that there are some incredibly sagacious teens out there. Most wished adults would acknowledge that relationships feel very real, and their feelings should not be brushed aside. Many also indicated that loving yourself is an important first step for any healthy relationship – also a key topic our student ambassador Samantha de Senna Fernandes has written about. And that's the theme we have adopted for our first Healthy Relationships Island module.

Where next on our edtech journey?
As secondary schools and colleges in the UK and elsewhere continue to face many pandemic-related challenges that threaten to overwhelm them, we are seeing an almost daily flow of stats and facts illustrating the problems. Here are just a few:
- 84% of UK teachers say they are stressed (Bernardo's)
- 70% of international school leaders say say they came close to breaking point during 2020 (Positive Principal)
- 55% of UK teachers say the one thing they would like most right now is an extra free period each week (Teacher Tapp)
We also hear first hand from teachers and school leaders about the pressures they are under, and we are incredibly grateful to those who have made time in their busy schedules this term to start a free trial of Persona Life Skills. We firmly believe it's a time investment that will pay off, benefitting your students as well as your hard-pushed PSHE, wellbeing and life skills teachers!
