In the Persona Life Skills social-emotional online learning platform, 'Leadership' is a new 60 min teacher-facilitated learning module, where students learn to develop their ability to lead, build the self-confidence required for a productive working relationship with their team leader, and consider how they could become an empathetic leader.
This new module is part of a growing library of modules covering different career and work life challenges, including job choices, getting along with colleagues, and giving presentations, among others.
Students are taken on a journey through knowing the importance of positive working relationships and empathy in a leader, and some quick take-away leadership tips. They consider strategies to improve team engagement and help manage conflict, whilst building their self confidence to lead and to be led.
Questions and activities in this module help students develop three social-emotional life skills, through a personality insights lens:
- Empathy – Understanding others' thoughts and feelings and considering their points of view
- Conflict Management – Being able to reduce conflict when there is a disagreement, for the benefit of all
- Self-confidence – Having trust in myself, regardless of what others may think
In the 'Get Your Bearings' warm-up, students consider two workplace scenarios – leading others and being led by someone else – whilst always leading themselves. They use their understanding of empathy to work out how to foster positive working relationships.
In the 'Explore' knowledge acquisition section, students learn strategies to manage conflict between colleagues in order to promote effective teamwork. They are asked to think about how their mix of personality styles (their 'Persona') is likely to influence their own approach to leadership.
As students reach the 'Viewpoint' plenary at the end of the module, they are asked to reflect on growth areas they would like to work on to ensure they feel well prepared for leading others and being led, in their future workplace. They leave understanding the concept of empathetic leadership, and some practical tips and strategies to put into practice.
Leadership is part of the Discovery Islands curriculum – the Persona Life Skills life challenge learning modules. Teachers with a free account can play through this module. A subscription is required to make it available to students.
